RCGP Response To The Healthcare Commission Report On COPD

The RCGP welcomes this report from the Healthcare Commission. The College agrees that there needs to be a step change in NHS policy and GPs and practice nurses have a central role in driving up standards. The report highlights improvements in diagnosis and care made through the Quality and Outcomes Framework by primary care.

RCGP Chairman Professor Mayur Lakhani said: "Until now COPD has been the Cinderella of chronic diseases. As a practising GP I know how much patients with COPD can suffer and there is a clear need for better services for patients.

"I am confident that care is already improving. Patients can expect more monitoring and treatment from their GP and practice nurses but more investment and improved access are needed for pulmonary rehabilitation.

"A step change in NHS policy is needed and we therefore welcome the announcement from the Secretary of State to establish a National Service Framework in this area. Frontline clinicians like GPs and practice nurses have a pivotal role in driving up standards and it is essential that they are engaged in developing the framework."

The RCGP has recently relaunched its website with improved style, navigation and content. You can see it at rcgp.uk
